About Our Community
Small Town with a Big Heart
Nestled along the scenic Alapaha River in Berrien County, Alapaha is a charming town with deep historical roots developed from a trade settlement on the site of a Seminole village. The name "Alapaha" may come from the Creek or Timucua languages. Established in 1874 as "Alapaha Station," a depot on the Brunswick and Albany Railroad, the town was officially incorporated in 1881.
Today, Alapaha has a population of 481 residents according to the 2020 census GMA, maintaining its small-town charm while serving the community with dedicated local government and services. The town is recognized as a Certified City of Ethics and continues to honor its rich history while looking toward the future.
Whether you're drawn to our historic downtown, the natural beauty of the Alapaha River, or our close-knit community spirit, Alapaha offers a welcoming place to call home in the heart of South Georgia.
UPCOMING EVENTS

IN HONOR OF OUR TOWN MAYOR WAYMOND SMITH
Mayor Smith has served as an elected official a total of three terms with his last ending on January 15, 2026. Mayor Smith also served 30 years on the Alapaha Volunteer Fire Department. Mayor Smith had a heart for Alapaha and he served his town and fellow peers well. Mayor was a man of few words but when he spoke you listened as he was full of wisdom. Mayor Smith spoke highly of the citizens here in Alapaha and the town was very lucky to have such a compassionate man to serve as their elected chief and leader. Mayor wore his title well for every decision he made was always with the town's best interest at heart. Mayor Smith fought for the citizens of Alapaha behind the scenes and he continues to do so through his peers. We are saddened for the town's loss and we pray for peace and comfort for the family and friends during this time. Arrangements to lay Mayor Smith to rest have been set forth as follows: Family and friends may view Mayor Waymond Smith at 10:00am at the Alapaha Gym the service will follow at 11:00am as well in the Alapaha Gym on Saturday January 24, 2026. For any questions please reach out to the Town Hall.

Call Before You Dig
Before starting any digging project in Alapaha, GA, it's essential to call 811 at least 48 hours in advance to have underground utilities marked. This free service, officially known as Georgia 811 (or Utilities Protection Center), helps prevent dangerous and costly accidents by identifying the location of buried gas, electric, water, sewer, telecommunications, and cable lines. Hitting an underground utility can result in serious injuries, service outages affecting entire neighborhoods, expensive repairs, and potential fines. The law requires calling 811 before digging, whether you're installing a fence, planting trees, or undertaking major construction.
Simply dial 811 or submit a request online
